   Любовница Манфреди Марина Мари, танцовщица из мюзик-холла, – наркоманка. Она покупает наркотики у Ингрид, авантюристки, работающей на майора Бергмана, офицера гестапо, занимающегося поисками Манфреди. Наутро, в день свадьбы Пины и Франческо, немцы окружают здание. Пойти наперекор природе кинематографа, машины по превращению настоящего в прошлое. Это первоначальное желание повлекло за собой все остальное. Документалистской концепции Росселлини как нельзя лучше послужили на редкость мучительные условия труда (перебои со светом, нехватка пленки: в результате длина планов зависела от того, сколько пленки имеется в запасе, и т. д.). Снимать кино о последних днях войны в Италии и испытать их на своей шкуре – совершенно разные вещи, но тут эти переживания слились воедино, что придает фильму поразительную историческую достоверность. В глазах сегодняшнего зрителя этот дневник исследователя настоящего (или прошлого, столь недавнего и мучительного, что настоящее по-прежнему пропитано им) кажется одновременно творением и вдохновенного любителя, и высококлассного профессионала, который постоянно подвергает сомнению свой профессионализм, действует ему вопреки и в конце концов обогащает его определенной дозой любительского подхода, продиктованной обстоятельствами съемок.

   Красочная и разнообразная игра актеров – как знаменитостей, так и дебютантов – очень далека от строгой нейтральности, которой Росселлини добился в Пайзе, здесь она присутствует только у Пальеро, профессионального актера, выдаваемого за непрофессионала. Чрезвычайно умелая конструкция повествования, фигуры 3 мучеников в центре сюжета, постепенное увеличение длительности сцен по мере того, как сюжет приближается к трагическому финалу, – все это свидетельствует о высочайшем повествовательном искусстве. В результате Рим, открытый город оказывается картиной, уникальной вдвойне: с одной стороны, это картина революционная, породившая целое направление и надежду на почти бесконечное обновление на эстетическом уровне; с другой – она остается верна знаниям и технологиям, накопленным кинематографом до ее появления. Она даже обогащает его достижения, поскольку ни один военный фильм до сей поры не заходил так далеко в изображении насилия и жестокости.

   БИБЛИОГРАФИЯ: сценарист Уго Пирро написал рассказ о съемках Рима, открытого города («Celluloide», Roma, Rizzoli, 1983), по которому можно снять отдельный фильм. Вот как Уго Пирро излагает факты. Сценарист Серджо Амиде и получает от продюсера Пеппино Амато аванс за написание сценария о римском черном рынке. Амиде и каждый день встречается с Росселлини, и эта идея ложится в основу будущего фильма. Амиде и пишет начало, где использует историю из собственной жизни: однажды немцы ворвались в его квартиру, прознав о том, что он прячет у себя антифашистов. Амиде и убежал от них по крышам. Консильо пишет новеллу о смерти священника. Амидеи требует восстановить политическое равновесие в фильме и сделать так, чтобы в другой новелле под пытками умер коммунист. Росселлини задумывает 3-ю новеллу, где героями станут дети. Росселлини связывается с Феллини и просит его поработать на фильме сценаристом втайне от Амидеи. Аванс от графини Полити растрачен, и Росселлини находит нового спонсора: разбогатевшего пастуха, влюбленного в кино и в особенности – в молоденьких актрис. Первые декорации возводят на улице, где расположен публичный дом. Амидеи задается вопросом, не обратится ли Росселлини к постоянному контингенту этого заведения на предмет финансовых вложений в создание фильма. Пеппипо Амато вновь проявляет интерес к картине и предлагает название Рим, открытый город (Росселлини на этот раз изменило вдохновение, и он предлагал назвать фильм Вчерашние истории). Объявляется и графиня Полити с целым чемоданом денег. Она требует убрать из сценария коммуниста. Росселлини обещает, что все будет сделано так, как она захочет. 1-й съемочный день – 17 января 1945 г. Снимают ночью, чтобы избежать перебоев с электричеством. Свет на площадке очень слабый, но именно этого и добивается Росселлини: он рад любой возможности нарушить привычные устои кинематографа. Просмотрев материал, отснятый за 1-ю неделю съемок, Пеппино Амато предпочитает выйти из проекта. Ему на замену Росселлини находит торговца тканями (Вентурини) и сержанта Гейгера, одного из 1-х американских солдат, вступивших в Рим. Гейгер работает в рекламе и обещает прославить фильм на весь мир. На съемках сын Маньяни и Массимо Серато заболевает полиомиелитом. Какое-то время Лина Маньяни думает совсем уйти из кино. Между ней и Росселлини начинается роман. Далее происходит эпическая ссора между Маньяни и Серато. Серато уезжает на грузовике, а Маньяни бежит за ним и падает в пыль. Амидеи предлагает снять смерть Пины именно таким образом. На 1-м закрытом показе все приходят в ужас, а больше всех ― прокатчик. Дело не только в диковинном стиле; сюжет нарушает все табу: наркотики, лесбийская любовь, пытки и т. д. Росселлини упрекает Амидеи за то, что в сценарии пролито слишком много крови. Но на 1-м публичном показе на музыкально-театральном фестивале в театре «Квирино», на сцене которого играла Анна Маньяни, восторгов заметно больше, чем свиста.
